MakePay, a non-custodial cryptocurrency payments company, is now integrated with Chainflip across two live surfaces. Its own payment gateway, serving more than 500 active merchants, routes cross-chain swaps through Chainflip. This month, MakePay also shipped an official BTCPay Server plugin, opening the same capability to the wider BTCPay merchant base, including businesses like Namecheap.
The MakePay integration puts Chainflip in a new place. Chainflip has been used mainly by people who set out to swap: through its own interface, wallets, or aggregators. In MakePay's flow, the swap happens inside a payment. The customer arrives to pay for something, uses whatever asset they already hold, and the merchant receives the currency they wanted. Neither side has to think about swapping.
How the MakePay Plugin Adds Cross-Chain Payments to BTCPay Server
Traditionally, a BTCPay merchant accepting Bitcoin could only receive Bitcoin. A customer holding ETH, USDC on Solana, or DOT had to swap on another platform first, then send BTC to the merchant. Two transactions, extra fees, and often a dropped conversion.
The MakePay plugin collapses that into one flow. The merchant creates a BTC invoice as normal. A customer paying with ETH, SOL, USDC, DOT, or any other Chainflip-supported asset gets a payment address on their chain, sends the native asset, and Chainflip settles BTC to the merchant's wallet. No wrapped tokens, no centralised payment provider, no new accounts on either side.
Merchants configure it once (settlement currency and receive wallet), and every subsequent invoice picks up the expanded payment options automatically.
The Merchant Demand Behind Multi-Cryptocurrency Checkout on BTCPay
BTCPay Server is the reference open-source, self-hosted payment processor for crypto. Merchants run their own instance and hold their own keys. Namecheap has used it since September 2021 and processed over $73M in BTC through it, including a single $2M Bitcoin domain sale. It integrates with over 30 e-commerce platforms including Shopify, WooCommerce, and Magento.
Every merchant already running BTCPay Server for Bitcoin acceptance can now add cross-chain support with one plugin install. The BTC merchant still receives BTC. What changes is which customers can pay them.
The demand was visible on MakePay's own book before the plugin shipped. MakePay CEO Ethan Carter pointed to the pattern that made it worth building:
"Many merchants were either moving from BTCPay Server to MakePay to accept more cryptocurrencies, or they were using both systems at the same time. We wanted to make this easier for them."
Many customers already hold ETH, SOL, USDT, or USDC. If a merchant accepts only Bitcoin, those customers have to exchange elsewhere first, then come back to pay. Carter summed up what merchants asked for:
"The most common request was that merchants wanted to accept more than just Bitcoin while still keeping everything decentralised."
Chainflip Powers Cross-Chain Swaps in Wallets, Aggregators, and Now Checkout
Chainflip is now the swap layer under a growing list of products: wallets (SubWallet for Polkadot Asset Hub, Phantom for Solana, Cake Wallet on mobile), aggregators (Rango, Symbiosis Pro Mode, THORWallet), Broker-as-a-Service integrations powering ShapeShift, LeoDex, and GemWallet, and now merchant checkout, through MakePay's own gateway and the BTCPay Server plugin.
Chainflip supplies the swap. Each integrator owns their user surface and their user relationships. The user does not need to know Chainflip exists to benefit from it. What they see is "pay with ETH" or "swap to DOT" working reliably, backed by the same infrastructure now sitting north of $8B in cumulative production volume.
What to Track: BTCPay Merchant Adoption of Cross-Chain Checkout
The integration matters only as much as merchant adoption. The signals to watch over the next few months:
Which BTCPay merchants enable the plugin, and which settlement currencies they choose.
Whether checkout drives visible Chainflip volume on Chainflip Scan.
Whether other checkout stacks (WooCommerce, Shopify apps, subscription platforms) adopt the same pattern.
What's Next: BTC-Backed Loans on MakePay's Roadmap
The BTCPay plugin is one part of a broader partnership. MakePay is also exploring Chainflip Lending for a specific customer group: businesses holding significant Bitcoin, particularly Bitcoin miners and mining hosts.
Carter on the demand:
"The market is at a point where such clients would be more open to not selling BTC but rather providing it as collateral and getting a loaned USDT instead. We are filtering out centralised solutions, as our company is focusing on decentralised payments, swaps, and loan systems only."
Mining operations that historically sold BTC to fund new hardware can post it as collateral instead, borrow stablecoins, and use the loan to buy more equipment while keeping the underlying BTC. Chainflip Lending is non-custodial, which fits MakePay's decentralisation-only stance.
Nothing is shipped on the lending side yet. MakePay is still in research and validation.
How to Install the MakePay Plugin for BTCPay Server
The plugin is in the BTCPay Server plugin marketplace and installs directly from a BTCPay admin panel. Source code and documentation are linked from the plugin listing.
Merchants outside the BTCPay ecosystem can call the same Chainflip liquidity through Broker-as-a-Service, or send users directly to swap.chainflip.io.

What is the MakePay plugin for BTCPay Server?
An open-source payment plugin for BTCPay Server that routes cross-chain swaps through Chainflip. It lets a merchant configure a settlement currency and then accept payment in any Chainflip-supported asset, with the swap happening on-chain during the payment flow.
Which assets can customers pay with?
Any asset Chainflip supports as a source, which includes native BTC, ETH, SOL, ARB, DOT, TRX, plus USDC and USDT across supported chains, including USDT-TRC20 on TRON and USDC/USDT on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Solana, and Polkadot Asset Hub. See swap.chainflip.io for the current supported list.
Do merchants need to trust MakePay or Chainflip with their funds?
No. The flow is non-custodial end-to-end. The merchant configures a receive wallet they control. The customer sends native assets from their own wallet. The swap settles directly to the merchant's wallet. Neither MakePay nor Chainflip holds funds during the transaction.
How do merchants install the plugin?
Through the BTCPay Server admin panel: navigate to Plugins, find MakePay Payments in the marketplace catalog, install it, then configure the settlement currency and receive wallet in the plugin settings. The plugin listing is at plugin-builder.btcpayserver.org.
Is Chainflip's role in the plugin publicly verifiable?
Yes. Swap routing runs on Chainflip's public infrastructure and every swap is trackable on Chainflip Scan.
